How To Construct A Torchlight When Camping
by Bryan Smythe
Creating a torchlight to be used while camping is a project the whole family can take part in. It is an easy process that will allow you to enjoy the outcome immediately. To make torchlights, you will need a few items - a few sections of PVC pipe, torch oil, a torch lighter, an empty and clean tuna fish can, an empty and clean soup can, a long strand of wick, a screwdriver, and duct tape. You might want to consider bringing along a storage bag so that you can pack away the sooty materials after using them.
Carefully punch a hole into the center of the tuna-sized can. While this step is safe for adults, teenagers should be supervised. If a young child wants to help with the project, make sure that this step is already taken care of. This will reduce the chances of injury. They will then be able to finish the rest of the project on their own.
Next, thread the wick through the hole you have created in the tuna fish can. After that, fasten the soup can onto one of the pieces of PVC pipe making sure that the can is in an upright position. After you are sure that it is securely fastened, you can push the PVC end into the ground until it is stable. This should be done in an area free of debris or anything that may present a fire hazard. Then, fill the soup can with the ignitor fluid. Next, place the tuna fish can on top of the soup can making sure that the smaller can is upside down. The wick will hang down into the lighter fluid.
The wick should soak very thoroughly in the lighter fluid for 30 minutes before you ignite it with your lighter. You will then have created a torchlight that can be enjoyed for hours. You can use the extra PVC pipes to create more torchlights to create a truly unique atmosphere. Don't forget to bring extra lighter fluid and wicks just in case the need should arise. This will ensure that you can enjoy your homemade torchlights throughout the trip.
At the end of the trip, disassemble the torchlights and store the used items in your bag as a safe way to carry them home. You will find the project fun for your family and a great way to enjoy your campsite.
