Waffle Irons and Camping Memories

When we're talking about waffles, we are talking about my love for them. I have loved waffles ever since I was a little boy, and as a grown man I still love them. I am writing to express my passion for waffles. I plan on sharing several different ways that I enjoy preparing and eating them. First however, I would like to tell you a little story and my memories of waffles warming the heart (or feet as it were).
I was eight years old, and I had just joined the Boy Scouts. We went on a camping trip to the Big Bear Mountains in Southern California. As soon as we got there, my friends and I got to our camp, set up our tents, cleared the brush away from the campsite and built a fire. Then with our scoutmaster watching the camp we all set out to explore the mountains. We had a great time all afternoon. Several of us found a stream to jump, and I tried to jump the furthest distance and landed smack in the water. My hiking boots and socks got all wet which happen to be the only pair I had because I was young and unprepared. So to make a long story short, I went back to the camp took off my boots and socks and put them down by the fire to dry.
After a very cold night without socks, I awoke early and got the fire good and hot warm my feet and dry my socks and shoes. When everyone finally awoke, we were all starving, especially me. The best thing I remember about that camping trip was mixing up batter and cooking waffles with an old-fashioned waffle iron over the fire. Waffles never tasted so good. I can still taste the butter and maple syrup over the hot crispy waffles. This one of my best memories as a child of how those waffles warmed me up and made everything "right as rain". Nordic Ware still makes those long-handled cast iron waffle irons of yesteryear. They come in either a square or round shape and are so reasonable that I recommend buying one of each for your next camping trip. It is my hope that you and your family also find a wonderful memory with waffles and camping. Remember when you pack for your next camping trip, make sure you take the waffle iron, waffle mix and your favorite toppings. Maple syrup, canned fruit and even peanut butter is always readily available and easy to transport. As a safety precaution, I prefer the long handled ones when I'm cooking over an open fire whenever I go camping with my family.
